Wandering Around

Management by Wandering Around

I have been wandering around the office ever since I started working. I engage in often times quick and sometimes long conversations with my other colleagues and occassionaly managers.

Conversations range from the quick and petty to the long and deep topics. I have had no apparent reason to be doing such a seemingly time wasting activity.

However, I recently stumbled upon a business lexicon by Tom Peters, Management by wandering around. This caught my eye. I then delved deeper.

MBWA is a Management or Leadership method which basically is more or less like what the military terms as “being on the ground”. The method improves communication and relationships. Tangible results are also demonstrated specially when an organization is under stress and a communication strain is apparent.

A, WOW moment for me there. I now found the reason why I have been going around and engaging. Even though I am not in a management position, I feel that I have strenghtened the foundations of the bridge of relationship between my team and our clients.

I would also like to add to this mantra that in wandering around, I more than just improve communication with others, I also improve my self. Creative ideas come to mind and other perspectives and horizons and shown to me.

So, wandering around is more than just for management, more than just improvement of communications and relationships, more than just linking networking, It is self-improvement as well.
