Singapore Tour of Museums

Posted on the June 22nd, 2010 under Others Matters,Sharing, singapore, travel by angelopanares

I’d like to share another good walking tour, this time focused on Museums. As visiting a Museum would take time, I believe 2 to 3 Museums in a day would be enough so as content would be properly absorbed. Singapore is endowed with a couple of really good museums, expected of any major tourist destination and from a nation fully supported of arts and culture most specially Singapore which is a melting pot of various cultures harmoniously living and working together.

Iphone 3GS direct from Apple

Posted on the June 22nd, 2010 under Others Matters,Sharing,Techie, singapore by angelopanares

Busted! after I upgraded my itouch to the latest iOS 4. The screen does not respond, even after a hard reset and a itunes restore. Phone support says I should bring it to the nearest service center. Oh well, I guess I deserved it, I should have waited for a week or to and see if there were problems with the new OS. I prodded and the call center dude shared that there were a couple of issues raised to them from customers who upgraded but it seems I’m the first one to have a non-responsive screen.

The main news I’d like to take up in this post is that while looking for support info for my iTouch, I noticed that the Apple Online Store for Singapore already sells Iphone 3GS directly and at a very cheap price, 748 SGD(around 24.6k PHP)! it comes unlocked(as all phones sold in SG are) and delivery is free. I had a hunch this would happen after the launch, just like the hunch I had that Macbooks of the previous generation would be sold at a good price to clear the stocks and I was right, I got might for 1288 SGD. Beside the 3GS is the new Iphone 4, the way it is presented seemingly shows that the latest Iphone might also be sold directly on the Apple Online Store? another great news if that ever happens.

Although we would still need a data plan to fully utilized these magnificent marvels of technology, having a choice of going pre-paid or sign-up with any carrier is freedom we should treasure. It’s gonna be sometime till the next update of this wonder will come so bargain hunters should grab this opportunity now!

The last IT show of the year will be on November and I’m betting on a good price for the recently upgrade Macbook Pro’s, if not, good deals on iPad’s. Anybody have plans of shopping for Christmas, schedule a trip to SG late November, the IT Show will be at the Expo. I was also eying the Thinkpad X100e solde for around 700+ SGD last PC Show but what would I do with another notebook :)

Tour de Singapore

Posted on the June 17th, 2010 under Lessons Learned,Others Matters,Sharing, singapore, travel by angelopanares

My parents was here for a visit for the past few days and I brought them around and had them tastes the best of everyday Singapore food at an authentic local experience of eating in hawker centres. I believe I already mentioned that it’s very busy time at work and it still is so I think for the next couple of weeks.

To do list and OSA

Posted on the June 9th, 2010 under Learning,Lessons Learned,Others Matters,Sharing,Work by angelopanares

I’ve been scratching off items almost half as many as the new ones I add on my to do list for the past couple of weeks.  Today, I was able to scratch of more than the ones I added, which is good in a lot of ways. Many people cope with multi-tasking and task management in different ways and I believe that whatever works well for you would be the best way. I do mine on a physical notepad and scratch off each item that gets done, it’s old school and there are loop holes but it’s what works well for me.

One item at a time and surely the list will get shorter.

Out and about weekend

My parents are visiting for two weeks and we were out and about the island to show them around, procure essentials and update ourselves with news from back home. It’s been a couple of months since I last saw my parents and I’m happy to see them. Hopefully, the family and I will be the ones visiting Cebu soon. I have lined-up a couple of must Singapore experiences for them and I can already scratch off a couple. Ride the MRT, Bus, Ikea, Suntec City and the fountain of Wealth, Carls Jr. and Orchard Road, White Carrot Cake, Kopi-O, Teh-O, Kaya toast, Roti Prata and Chicken Rice. I’ll still need to schedule a visit to Mustafa and Little India and Museums and try out some more Singapore staple dishes such as Roti John, Satay, Hokien Mee, Hor Fun and Biryani, hopefully we get to find time this weekend for all of these.

Using AWSTATS on downloaded log files

Posted on the June 3rd, 2010 under Learning,Lessons Learned,Sharing,Work by angelopanares

I’m working on analyzing downloaded web server logs and it took a while to find a suitable tool for it. I tried a couple of installables but the reports and information where just not up to par. If only Google analytics would accept these files then I would have been set. Anyways, I finally settled on using AWSTATS, I already had experience with it before and from the alternatives, it was as closest to a full featured analytical tool that is free I could come close to.

Any word for more than busy?

Posted on the June 2nd, 2010 under Learning,Lessons Learned,Others Matters,Sharing,Work by angelopanares

Is there any word which means more than busy? If there is, let’s use that to describe my team’s current situation. It seems 24 hours is not nearly enough but we stride on. Moving forward, pushing forward, tackling one task at a time, counting, one, two, three…. every task accomplished is a celebration in itself. One down! I shout in my mind.  After scratching off a more than a handful on my list, a couple more are appended. Despite of it all, it still is truly a satisfying as it is more than challenging.

Long Weekend

Monday is almost upon us and the long weekend is coming to a close. Rain also came for an hour or two, just enough to cool things around. I’m looking forward to a full week of work and learning. We spent the later part of the day at the Expo and it sure had a lot in-store for us. First was the gamers event with a little tech show. The Blizzard section was huge and people got to play with the highly anticipated Starcraft 2.

Pouring Rain

Posted on the May 29th, 2010 under Others Matters by angelopanares

Rain poured yesterday, an eventful and welcomed respite after a sleepless night of hot, humid weather. Weather forecasts indicates the rainy season is almost upon us, I’ll have to put back the umbrella on bag again and be ready. Singapore has a sophisticated and very well planned flooding system, although last year there was flooding in Bukit Timah, I think it was the 1% out of 100% effectivity, which leaves us with 99% probability of no flooding. Which is leaps and bounds from what we have in the Philippines, no one is thinking long term, the cisterns are small and constantly flooded, the people are not disciplined enough to know that littering will clog up the drainage and they will ultimately suffer from the flooding.

Hot Days

Posted on the May 28th, 2010 under Lessons Learned,Others Matters,Sharing,Work by angelopanares

It has been so hot the past couple of days that it feels like the world has become a global sauna. Airconditioning units are struggling to keep up to no avail, we had to turn it off and open the windows, but in a very humid country such as Singapore it sometimes is futile. We’ll have to trudge along and try to cope up. One very popular sandwich store at the office yesterday closed shop, a sign was left for their avid customer, “Went off to escape the heat, will be back monday”. I was cursing the cold weather in London last November, how I wish it was that cold now, around 10 degrees I think is just a good temperature. Last I hear, London was also nearing 30. Siberia might be a good place to scape and cool off ? Showers over the weekend is the forecast, I hope it brings lots of cool breeze and bring the temperature downwards. Is hoping for 14% hoping for too much?
